Architectural Elements

Interior of a dome structure, hemispherical shape evolved from the arch and forming a roof. A dome can rest directly upon walls, columns, or a system of pendentives used to support the transition of shape from a building base to the round base of the dome. There are many variations on this shape and how it is supported. However, in this case there are six ribs that intersect at the apex of the dome and rotates around its vertical axis. They were prominent in Persian, Roman, and Byzantine architecture. Famous examples of domes that exist today include the Taj Mahal, US Capitol and cathedrals found across Europe.

Dormer window comprised of a circular pediment, large lintel, and jambs. A dormer is a small roofed structure that projects outwards from the main pitched roof of a building. Dormers are commonly used to increase the usable space in a loft without needing to construct a new storey. and to create window openings. The word dormer is derived from the Middle French dormeor, meaning "sleeping room".

Natural stone carving meant to imitate a window, including the arched casing and keystone. Stone arches were initially developed during the Roman civilization and have been used in architecture ever since. Keystones are located at the apex of the structure of windows and doors. Keystones serve as a decorative element but can also function to bear the entire weight of the arch and distribute weight down the side support blocks in the columns.

Exterior door trim with large jambs. For symmetric designs, it provides a centre point and is often used to add grandness to the entrance of a building.

Natural stone ionic columns and entablature. Ionic is one of three column styles used in ancient Greece and easy to distinguish by their volutes. The volute is the spiral, scroll-like capital which is the defining feature of the Ionic column. The entablature is like a lintel that rests on top of the columns. It has decorative carvings and could function to help support the weight of the roof.

Architectural mascaron ornament, is usually a human face but sometimes a distorted figure. The architectural style was commonly used decades ago in Europe as a decorative element.

Stone gargoyles which are typically used as a waterspout, found along building roofs and gutters. They look like all kinds of strange creatures, which were believed to protect the building by scaring away harmful spirits. They feature troughs cut into their backs to catch water during rainfalls. The water travels along this groove and is deposited out through the mouth of the gargoyle, protecting the building stone. The word gargoyle comes from the French word gargouille, which means “throat".

Decorative stone shield at the upper corner of a building. During Medieval times in Europe, the use of the shield became popular for families to share their coat of arms. This was defined as a collection of symbols that represented various aspects like their social status, defining trait and beliefs. Animals were the most common type of symbol used in association with heraldic shields.
